Visit to the Gaudreau recycling center in Victoriaville this morning for the Arthabaska by-election.

This plant differs from the others in that they accept and process #6 and #7 plastics and promote the local resale of recycled materials in order to reduce carbon emissions from transportation.

Thank you to Operations Director Nicolas Gaudreau for this fascinating tour!

Excellent meeting with the mayor of Victoriaville, and former Bloc Québécois MP André Bellavance today during the Arthabaska by-election!

Mr. Bellavance spoke to me about the lack of funding from the provincial government to protect the city’s drinking water, which is currently threatened by the accumulation of sediment in the Beaudet reservoir.

He also told me about the city’s opposition to Bill 106 on hydrocarbons, which will give oil companies the right to expropriate landowners. Of course, our position is to give municipalities a veto so that they can block economic development projects that are not in their interests. He also told me about his opposition to the Optilab project, which will centralize the processing of medical samples in Trois-Rivières, another point we have in common.

With respect to public transit, the city is asking for more funding from the provincial government. I informed him that the Green Party of Quebec believes that the Quebec green fund, financed by the carbon exchange, should be used to expand public transit services in the regions. We also support the abolition of fares to encourage people to take advantage of its services, which are essential in the fight against climate change.

The city’s Director General, Martin Lessard, informed us that underfunding and cuts within the Ministry of the Environment are causing significant delays in the granting of certificates of authorization, which is hindering the region’s development. They also indicated that there is a lack of funding for arts and culture, notably the fact that the city’s new cultural centre, Square 150, is not adequately funded by the provincial government and that the city and its citizens pay most of the operating costs.

A very enriching meeting this morning with Marie-pier Pomerleau, administration worker at the composting site at Gaudreau environnement in Saint-Rosaire, Quebec!

Ms. Pomerleau reminds us of the importance of responsibility and citizen participation in the municipal composting process.

The treatment of residual materials is a field in expansion, with new technologies to come, especially with regard to the use and capture of biogas.

This visit was a perfect complement to yesterday’s visit to the sorting and recycling plant, which leads us to reflect on the objectives that Quebec will have to achieve in terms of composting and GHGs.

Thank you to the Gaudreau team and a warm welcome from Marie-Pier.
