Montreal, March 4, 2014 – The leader of the Green Party of Quebec, Alex Tyrrell, calls on the Minister of Natural Resources, Martine Ouellet, to immediately announce the interruption of phases 3 and 4 of the hydroelectric dam construction project on the Romaine River in Northern Quebec. “It makes no sense to spend so much public money on unnecessary dams while we are swimming in surplus electricity. This government seems to have no sense of priorities,” he said.
“Phases 1 and 2 are too far along to be cancelled. It would cost a lot of money, and in any case the environmental damage has already been done. But it’s not too late to cancel Phases 3 and 4 and then reallocate our investments to other priorities, such as wind power development or energy efficiency,” said the GPQ leader and candidate in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.
“We therefore support the position developed by the Commission sur les enjeux électriques du Québec. It’s time to put this project on ice and reassess our priorities immediately. The realities outlined in the Commission’s report (and already mentioned by former Premier Jacques Parizeau) will not change between now and next spring.
In light of the election campaign that is on our doorstep, we demand that the Parti Québécois be immediately accountable to Quebecers on this issue. The credibility of Minister Ouellet and her energy strategy is at stake,” added Mr. Tyrrell.
